Microplastics in the Amazon

Reporting from Mongabay tracks microplastic contamination across Amazon rivers, streams, lakes and mangroves, from the Negro River bed to nesting sites where the Amazon meets the sea. Pirarucu, a large Amazon fish, have been found ingesting microplastics, and emerging evidence points to contamination reaching tapirs, bats, monkeys and amphibians.

Researchers say the scale of the pollution and its effects on biodiversity and river-dependent communities remain largely unmeasured, even as the contamination itself is already documented.
