Family in Russia’s Irkutsk region accuses police of plying a 54-year-old man with alcohol and forcing him to sign papers for military service in Ukraine

The family of Vladimir Shch., a 54-year-old businessman in Russia's Irkutsk region, has complained to prosecutors that police forcibly took him to a military enlistment office and plied him with alcohol overnight before having him sign a military service contract. Relatives say he was denied his glasses at the office, which they believe was meant to stop him reading what he was signing, and that a district officer blocked his wife from retrieving him until after a medical exam.

His daughter says at least 17 other men may have been similarly taken to the same enlistment office in the past two weeks, and has asked prosecutors to investigate unverified claims that police receive payment for signing men up. The case follows earlier reports from a different outlet describing men with criminal records or disabilities being rounded up by people in military uniforms in the same town.

A contract signed without your glasses on is not much of a contract, it is a formality dressed up to look like one. When the same town produces the same story more than once, the pattern stops being a coincidence and starts being a method. Somebody ought to ask what quota is being filled here, because it clearly isn't volunteers.
