Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said trade talks with Washington could resume only if the U.S. gets serious, accusing American negotiators of pushing terms that would leave Canadian industries ‘gradually wound down… and wiped out.’ His comments followed a fresh barrage from Washington since talks collapsed August 21, including Trump's push to rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America,’ Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's ‘tit for tat’ dig at Canada's smaller economy, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mocking Canadian military cadets online.

Carney called Hegseth's post ‘beneath their office’; the Pentagon responded only that ‘the X post speaks for itself.’ Bessent countered on Fox News that Carney had received a ‘verbal beatdown,’ while Carney maintained Washington sought an ‘uncompetitive’ deal touching autos, French-language protections, and limits on Canada's future trade deals — all of which he said Canada would reject.
