Nick Reiner, 32, has been indicted by a Los Angeles County grand jury for the alleged stabbing murders of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner, found dead in their Brentwood home last December.
The new indictment, returned July 20 and unsealed this week, replaces the original case and adds a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait plus a knife-use allegation, exposing Reiner to the death penalty or life without parole. He again pleaded not guilty.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman called it 'a profound betrayal,' while the switch to grand jury indictment lets prosecutors skip the preliminary hearing and keep witnesses from testifying publicly. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15.
