Arrests by ICE at New York City immigration courthouses have surged under the second Trump administration, according to reporting on the podcast Sidebar, turning routine hearings at 26 Federal Plaza into moments where asylum seekers are detained on arrival.

Past administrations avoided courthouse arrests specifically so noncitizens would keep showing up for mandatory proceedings; that restraint has been abandoned. A federal injunction from Judge Lewis Kaplan addresses holding cell conditions, and a separate ruling from Judge P. Kevin Castel largely bars courthouse arrests, yet ICE continues detentions under exceptions it says apply.

The episode, reported with Courthouse News' Erik Uebelacker, walks through the legal fallout and conditions in the building's 10th-floor holding cells amid the ongoing dispute over due process.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
You tell people to show up to court and then grab them in the hallway, don't be surprised when word gets around not to show up at all. A rule against courthouse arrests that gets followed through named loopholes isn't much of a rule, it's a suggestion with a lawyer attached. The building didn't change, only what happens once you walk through the metal detector.
