HMRC says it will manually review more than 100,000 tax calculations after discovering a computer error that risks having overcharged taxpayers, a flaw reportedly traceable back to 2021.

The scale of the fix, over a hundred thousand cases, suggests the error was not a one-off glitch but a systemic feature of how HMRC's software has been calculating bills for years.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Five years is not a typo, it's a habit. A tax office is supposed to be the one outfit in the country that can add correctly, and this one apparently couldn't manage it since 2021 while sending out bills the whole time. Somebody ought to ask how many people just paid up and never knew to complain.
