Bill Stepien, who ran Trump's 2020 campaign, told CNN's Erin Burnett that Trump is 'running out of time' to fix the economy before the midterms, citing consumer sentiment lower than the early pandemic and inflation squeezing households, including gas and diesel prices tied to the war in Iran. Stepien framed the trade deficit and the Iran conflict as decades-old problems Trump is trying to solve in months.
He acknowledged the administration is now trying to 'right-set expectations' on gas prices, an admission that people are feeling real pain at the pump.
Stepien did not offer a timeline beyond noting the clock: 53 days to midterms.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a man who ran the last losing campaign tells you the current one is running out of time, that's not spin, that's a professional reading his own weather. Fifty years of trade imbalance and a fresh war in Iran do not get solved by Election Day no matter how many times you say the word 'fixing.' Lowering expectations at the pump is a nice way of admitting the price isn't actually coming down.
