House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared in Mason, Michigan with Rep. Tom Barrett and other Republicans to boost Barrett's reelection bid against Democrat Will Lawrence. Police unions endorsed Barrett at the event, citing his work securing $2 million in federal funds for local police departments.
Barrett accused Lawrence of wanting to defund police, pointing to a 2020 social media post, while Johnson called Lawrence a socialist pushing communist policies. Lawrence countered that Barrett voted with Trump 99% of the time and was campaigning alongside an official who stalled release of the Epstein files.
Asked about two Barrett-authored bills, one restricting local use of federal funds for surveillance cameras, another authorizing the Iran war with an exit plan, Johnson praised Barrett's work but offered no commitment on when either might actually move. The Iran authorization has sat untouched in committee since May.

A sheriff's department parking lot with five members of Congress and a stack of posterboards is a lot of production for two bills that have not moved an inch since spring. Calling your opponent a communist is cheaper than passing legislation, and a whole lot louder. Barrett wrote a real bill to end a real war, and his own party's leadership cannot find a date on the calendar for it.
