UK sanctions Israeli settlements in occupied West Bank as Israel announces consulate closure, bans British lawmakers

Britain announced sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, banning settlement imports including dates, avocados and wine, and calling the occupation unlawful, according to Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who accused 'settler terrorists' of driving out Palestinians. The measures also restrict settlement property advertising and some arms licenses, joining similar moves by France, Canada and ten other countries.

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the remarks 'outrageous lies,' announced the closure of Britain's Jerusalem consulate, and said Israel would bar 12 British lawmakers including Jeremy Corbyn from entry. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee warned of unspecified American 'repercussions,' while Israel's national security minister separately urged recognizing the Falklands as occupied Argentine territory, a suggestion that arrived with no apparent connection to anything else in the dispute.

When a disagreement over settlements ends with someone bringing up the Falklands, you know the argument has stopped being about the argument. Both governments are talking past each other in the loudest terms available, consulates and travel bans and all, while the people actually living under occupation get a joint statement calling for restraint. Strong words are cheap, and everyone in this story has plenty to spare.
