A judge expands a block on U.S. Postal Service work on Trump's mail-in voting order

A federal judge in Boston has expanded her block on Trump's executive order limiting mail-in voting, this time nationwide rather than just the 23 mostly Democratic states and D.C. that originally sued. Judge Indira Talwani ruled that voting rights groups are likely to prove the order oversteps presidential authority and is causing voter confusion, while the case awaits a Supreme Court decision on her earlier ruling.

Talwani noted the federal government has repeatedly declined to defend the order's constitutionality in court and offered no evidence of the fraudulent absentee voting it claims to prevent. The order would have USPS compile voter lists from states and restrict absentee ballot delivery to those on the lists.

Voting rights groups, including the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts and the ACLU, praised the ruling as protection for midterm voters. Trump has defended the order as targeting illegal voting by non-citizens, a problem multiple studies describe as extremely rare.

An administration that won't even show up to defend its own executive order in court has, at minimum, told you what it thinks of its own legal footing. Judges keep asking for evidence of the fraud this order supposedly prevents, and keep getting silence in return. That's not a legal strategy — it's a tell.
