BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar has asked Mumbai's civic commissioner to relocate the above-ground Lion Gate 'Aspirational Toilet' and two adjacent waste management chowkies underground, arguing the structures block a planned footpath and violate the BMC's own 'Pedestrian First' policy. He wants only a minimal, wooden-slatted pavilion left visible in the heritage-protected Kala Ghoda precinct.

The Rs 1.65 crore toilet is already under scrutiny: during the July 2025 Assembly session, BJP MLA Amit Satam and others raised concerns about irregularities in the project, prompting a state minister to order a construction stay pending inquiry. Narwekar's letter adds that the site falls within a UNESCO heritage conservation buffer zone.

He's framing the request as consistent with pedestrianization efforts already underway at Kala Ghoda and planned for Regal Junction, where an acre-sized pedestrian plaza is coming.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A toilet that cost over a crore and a half is currently under investigation for irregularities, and the constructive feedback on offer is interior design notes about wooden slats and arched roofs. Burying the eyesore underground doesn't answer why it went over budget or under scrutiny in the first place. Heritage sensitivity is a fine principle to discover after the money's already spent.
