Russian Air and Space Forces officer Nikolay Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, was shot near his home near Saratov on September 3, according to Russian outlet Agentstvo. Ukraine's SBU had charged him days earlier over the July 8, 2024 missile strike on Kyiv's Okhmatdyt children's hospital, which killed two adults and damaged 24 departments.

The attacker reportedly approached on a motorcycle and opened fire, wounding Varpakhovich and his driver before fleeing. Russian investigators opened a criminal case for attempted murder, and the officer's condition remains unknown.
