Austin Yohe and Daniel Burns, both tied to a Southern California white supremacist group, were charged with federal hate crimes and obstruction for a pair of unprovoked attacks at the Oceanside Pier last summer, one against a man sitting with his wife after a funeral, the other against two U.S. Marines. A third man, Johnny Lee Lane, pleaded guilty Wednesday to the same attacks.

Prosecutors say the first victim suffered a concussion and hospitalization after being stomped and slammed into a wall, while the two Marines, who hadn't provoked the group, suffered facial fractures and head injuries in a second assault minutes later. Yohe and Burns are also accused of lying to police and the FBI about their involvement.

Hate crime charges carry up to 10 years, obstruction up to 20; a trial is set for Oct. 30, with Lane's sentencing in January.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Two men who allegedly beat strangers over their race also apparently couldn't keep their story straight with the FBI afterward, which is its own kind of confidence. Picking a fight with a pair of Marines because of how they look is the sort of decision that tends to come with consequences, eventually, on a federal docket.
