Italy extended border checks on travelers from Spain another 15 days, prompting Spain to keep its own reciprocal checks running through Oct. 8. The dispute began in August after tens of thousands of migrants from Morocco entered the Spanish territory of Ceuta, leading Italy's Interior Ministry to suspend Schengen free movement with Spain.

Italy cites unspecified security risks and possible terrorist infiltration as justification; Spain says its reasons for retaliating remain unchanged. Both sides say they might revisit the timeline if circumstances shift, without saying what would count as a shift.

Two countries with no shared border have found a way to fight about one anyway, checking people at ports and airports over a crisis that happened in Ceuta. The word ‘terrorist infiltration’ is doing a lot of work for a policy that started as payback. When the reason given is this vague, the real reason is usually just that nobody wants to blink first.
