There is something magnificently circular about a head of state clipping a news story about someone liking him and then signing the repost, as though the presidency were a memo pad requiring initials. “Total winner” is here defined with admirable clarity: a person who has said a nice thing and refused to take it back. This is not politics, it is a loyalty punch card, and the reader is invited to watch the hole being punched in real time. A government of laws, not of men, and certainly not of press clippings.
