Here is a man announcing his own loyalty in the same breath he assigns a widow an insult nickname, which is a bit like proving your table manners by throwing the soup. The logic on display holds that a courtesy extended to the dead creates a permanent lien on the living, payable in silence. He even concedes it is politics, then insists it shouldn't be — the classic move of scolding a rule while playing it dirtier than anyone. A president who can only remember his own generosity by demanding applause for it has revealed exactly what the generosity was for.
