The tell is always “many people suggested,” the phantom focus group that exists solely to launder a president's own whim into a groundswell. Note the structure: a state gets accused of cheating and offered a rebrand in the same breath, which is less a proposal than a protection racket with a thesaurus. New Mexico has been part of the United States for well over a century and has been called New Mexico for considerably longer than that, a fact that requires no fact-checking, only a map. The word “potentially” is doing more work here than anyone in the building.
