Nothing says steady hands on the future of machine intelligence like a denial that opens with ‘will not be going to be’ — a verb pileup no chatbot would dare generate. Reason Number One is that Bessent doesn’t want the job, and Reason Number Two is that the President doesn’t want him to have it, which raises the question of why a staffing decision with two ‘no’ votes needed a public ruling at all. ‘Why would I ever make such a change?’ is a fine question from a man whose cabinet has historically had the shelf life of deli meat. And if the idea was Fake News, it is remarkable how much official comment it earned.
