A head of state is uniquely positioned to do something about a war, which makes narrating one like a man reading a ticker at the barbershop an odd use of the office. The figures arrive unsourced and unattributed, floated with the confidence of intelligence briefings and the accountability of a rumor. And the closing note — a shrug, essentially — lands as the whole of the policy: the suffering is acknowledged, catalogued alongside refinery damage, and then filed. If ending it is truly the goal, the post is a curious place to keep announcing it.
