Twenty-five years of government hesitation about a landing pad is not, in fact, a mystery that required genius to solve — it may simply be that nobody previously arranged for a giant defense contractor to build one at the president's house. Gifts from vendors to the officials who approve their contracts are a category of transaction that ordinarily comes with paperwork, not a press release. The stonemasons deserve the thanks; the arrangement deserves an auditor. Announcing your own gratitude from inside the helicopter is a level of self-congratulation that even the rotors cannot drown out.
