UK asylum claims fall 21% as government moves to curb backlog

UK Home Office figures show asylum claims fell 21% to about 86,000 in the year ending June, with small boat arrivals down 23% to roughly 33,000 and the number of asylum hotels cut in half to about 16,000. The backlog of initial decisions fell 56% to 40,000.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood credited increased enforcement, overseas operations, and new legislation, and pledged continued efforts including replacing hotels with other accommodation by 2029. Despite the declines, today's total remains almost twice the 48,540 claims recorded in 2021, driven partly by Afghan, Sudanese, and other nationals fleeing conflict.

YouGov polling found 40% of respondents incorrectly believe boat crossings are increasing, a misperception strongest among Reform UK supporters, even as immigration remains the public's top political concern and fuels Nigel Farage's party, which faces separate investigations over undeclared financial support.

A government can hand out genuinely improved numbers and still lose the argument if the public believes the opposite, which is either a communications failure or evidence that the debate was never really about the numbers. Either way, cutting a backlog in half apparently buys you very little goodwill when the loudest voices insist otherwise.
