A flash flood in Nepal on Wednesday, likely triggered by a glacier chunk breaking off and temporarily damming a river, has killed at least 353 people, with more than 1,300 still missing.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse behind the catastrophic debris flow that followed. Researchers are still combing through satellite and ground data to piece together exactly what happened.

Experts stop short of blaming the disaster directly on global warming, while noting that rising temperatures are increasing such risks across the rapidly warming Himalayan region.
