Croatian citizens across three counties have mobilized against 24 proposed industrial poultry projects advanced by agricultural giant MHP and Premium Chicken Company, the latter backed by Ukrainian gambling magnate Andrii Matiukha's holding company.

Protests drew 5,000 people in Zagreb and over 1,000 in Sisak, backed by more than 160 civil society groups and a petition with over 51,000 signatures citing lack of transparency and favoritism toward investors.

MHP withdrew from its Sisak-area project in May 2026 after local opposition, canceling 12 of the 24 subprojects, though PCC continues pursuing the rest and separate projects near the village of Apatija remain active despite local objections.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a village named Apathy becomes the epicenter of a national protest movement, something has gone badly wrong with whoever assumed nobody would notice. Fifty-one thousand signatures and a mayor who calls community objections an obstacle to progress is not a portrait of good-faith planning.
