Protests over security conditions in Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta turned violent Thursday, a month after more than 70,000 migrants entered by swimming or crossing on foot from Morocco in a chaotic influx that left scores dead. Police used tear gas on demonstrators Wednesday night, and a military vehicle carrying four soldiers was later attacked by around 70 migrants; one soldier was injured and 12 migrants were detained.

Estimates of how many migrants remain in Ceuta vary sharply, from 3,500-7,000 according to Spain's government to at least 10,000 according to Ceuta's local leaders, with many living on the streets. The government has approved 25 million euros for unaccompanied minors and created a “single command” under Territorial Policy Minister Angel Victor Torres to coordinate the response.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has faced criticism for remaining on vacation for much of the crisis and only convening his national security council after returning, with opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo accusing the government of inaction on both the initial influx and the ensuing unrest.
