Dutch court jails man for life over role in Rwanda genocide

A Dutch court sentenced 66-year-old Eugene N. to life in prison Friday for genocide and war crimes tied to the 1994 slaughter of roughly 3,000 Tutsis who had sought refuge in a stadium in Mbazi, Rwanda.

Judges found he blocked victims from escaping, threw a grenade into the crowd, and was involved in earlier attacks in which homes were looted and burned, acting with what the court called genocidal intent.

N. denied the charges and said he too lost dozens of relatives; his lawyers argued he tried to prevent the genocide and plan to appeal. He cannot be extradited to Rwanda because he holds Dutch citizenship, and was arrested in 2024 after a Dutch investigation opened in 2020.
