Russia launched a combined drone and ballistic missile attack on Ukraine early on August 27, killing a 78-year-old woman in Zaporizhzhia and injuring people in Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, Sumy, and Odesa; a school in Kyiv sustained significant damage from falling drone debris. Ukraine's General Staff, which had stopped reporting interception numbers in mid-August amid an interceptor shortage, said air defenses downed one Onyx missile and seven ballistic missiles, without disclosing how many Russia fired in total.

The resumed reporting follows President Zelensky's statement that Ukraine has received “a few” Patriot missiles from Nordic-Baltic and “coalition of the willing” allies after recent summits, though he said more are still needed. Separately, Russian oil exports through Novorossiysk fell sharply in August as shipping costs rose over military risk and MSC suspended new bookings to the port after a drone strike on one of its vessels.
