Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday he opposes automated tickets generated by AI-powered roadside cameras, insisting a human officer must issue any citation, even as he praised the Florida Highway Patrol's use of automated license plate readers. He said he backs giving law enforcement tools to hold criminals accountable but doesn't want Florida to become a 'surveillance state.'

DeFlock reports 7,169 such cameras statewide, ranking Florida tenth per capita and sixth per road mile nationally. DeSantis renewed his push for an AI 'Bill of Rights' he championed this session, blaming the Republican-controlled House for blocking it, and warned the situation 'will get a lot worse' without legislative action, since county and municipal governments keep approving the cameras.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Endorsing the surveillance infrastructure while objecting only to its most efficient use case is a fairly precise definition of having it both ways. If the concern is a surveillance state, the camera count is the number to worry about, not who pushes the button on the ticket.
