Israeli minister sets out plan to ‘Judaize’ Arab population centers

Israel's far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich announced a plan Thursday to bring one million additional Jewish residents into the Negev and Galilee, regions with large Arab Israeli populations, through 40 new communities and hundreds of thousands of housing units.

Smotrich framed the plan as replicating the settlement expansion his party has driven in the occupied West Bank, and his party posted an AI-generated video depicting Arab men distressed over the proposal. He also pledged to cancel existing development plans in Arab communities and to install what he called Zionist professionals in key government positions.

The announcement lands ahead of Israel's October 27 elections, with Smotrich's party currently polling near the threshold needed to retain seats in parliament. Arab citizens make up about 21% of Israel's population of 10.2 million.
