Postal Service pushes ahead on Trump order limiting vote-by-mail

The U.S. Postal Service published an FAQ Thursday explaining how it will implement a Trump administration rule requiring states to hand over voter rolls to the federal government and blocking mail ballots for voters who don't match federal citizenship data. The rule also changes mail ballot standards that states say are logistically impossible to meet before the November 3 midterms.

Two dozen Democratic-led states plus the District of Columbia and voting rights groups have sued to stop it, arguing it tramples states' constitutional authority over their own elections. The Supreme Court temporarily let the policy proceed on procedural grounds this week, prompting the states to refile.

The Justice Department calls the rule minor housekeeping that 'does not displace a single State election law' and 'need not and should not prevent a single voter from voting by mail.' Trump, for his part, declared North Carolina's upcoming mail-in ballots 'great' under the new regime, which is not usually how modest infrastructure tweaks get described by the president.

Calling it modest while racing to implement it before an election, mid-lawsuit, is the kind of confidence that should make everyone else nervous. The claim that it 'need not' stop a single voter from voting is doing a lot of quiet work in that sentence.
