Count the possessives: ‘my leadership,’ ‘my Department,’ ‘my direction,’ ‘my Commerce Department.’ A federal agency funded by taxpayers has become a personal holding company with a press office. The claim that Japan will pay because he directed it to is not how sovereign nations work, but it is how a man describes a dinner check he did not pick up. As for being ‘the first ever’ to turn government money into returns, Washington has taken stakes in private companies before and gotten paid back. The only true first here is a President marking his own portfolio and calling the paper gain ‘money for America.’
