Democratic lawmakers introduce bills expanding health coverage for low-income Michiganders

State Rep. Mai Xiong and state Sen. John Cherry, both Michigan Democrats, introduced companion bills — House Bill 6274 and Senate Bill 1152 — to create a Medicaid buy-in program in the state.

The proposal targets residents earning between 133% and 200% of the federal poverty level who don't qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, aiming to offer them health coverage at lower premiums than ACA marketplace plans.

New York, Oregon, Minnesota, and Washington D.C. have already adopted similar basic health programs under an existing ACA option, which the Michigan bills would use as a model.
