Calling a CIA director's unannounced Kremlin visit 'semi-routine' while also hinting it might produce a breakthrough is not clarification, it's having it both ways in real time. When the Kremlin's version of events sounds more precise than the White House's, that's not a great look for whoever's supposed to be running point.
