Dementia care navigators help Coloradans get the support they need

Colorado is home to four of 292 GUIDE programs nationally, a Medicare initiative launched in 2024 that pairs dementia patients and caregivers with trained navigators at no additional cost, offering care coordination, education and respite options. Latino Coloradans, who make up nearly a quarter of the state's population and face 1.5 times the Alzheimer's risk of white Americans according to the Alzheimer's Association, were the focus of a 2024 research effort that convened eight Latino caregivers as advisers.

Those advisers flagged a lack of interpreters and language-matched services as a persistent barrier, prompting the University of Colorado's GUIDE program to hire bilingual navigators and add Spanish-language resources; the state health department separately launched a bilingual dementia awareness campaign. The Colorado program has enrolled 200 patients and caregivers in its first two years and is tracking outcomes on caregiver strain and care quality.
