An inquest opened Wednesday in London into the death of Jason Arday, the former Cambridge professor found dead at his south London home on August 14, roughly a week after he resigned amid plagiarism and credential allegations he disputed. Coroner Julian Morris said police found no signs of foul play and the death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious.

Arday, appointed Cambridge's youngest-ever Black professor in 2023, resigned as both institutions launched investigations, saying the move should not be mistaken for accepting the accusations against him. Some commentators had used the controversy to attack diversity initiatives, a framing Arday and others called racially motivated. The hearing lasted under five minutes, with no date set for its continuation.
