DeSantis administration moving to regulate AI from Pre-K to PhD

Florida's Board of Governors and Board of Education are advancing parallel rules requiring public schools, colleges, and universities to disclose faculty and student AI use on syllabi and adopt AI-specific internet safety policies. The K-12 rule, up for a Sept. 16 vote, would require parental notification when AI tools are approved for classroom use, giving the platform name and nature of student interaction, with compliance required by July 2027.

The draft explicitly bars AI tools from simulating friendship, companionship, or emotional relationships with students, or using anthropomorphic design to encourage continued interaction. It also requires that AI supplement rather than replace teacher judgment, stay 'viewpoint neutral,' and avoid being used to profile students for training commercial models.

The Florida Education Association's president said the union supports guardrails protecting student data and educator workload, provided no additional unfunded work lands on teachers. DeSantis' administration did not respond to a request for comment on the policy it is pushing forward.
