Tiny house villages are increasingly responding to the homeless crisis in America’s fast-growing cities

Charlotte, North Carolina, added over 20,000 residents in a year and is the fastest-growing large U.S. city, but its homeless population jumped from 444 to 2,018 people between 2025 and 2026 as median rent climbed from $1,146 to $1,627 a month since 2019. Researchers say the share of people exiting homeless services into permanent housing fell from 38% in 2020 to 25% in 2024.

In response, resident-led tiny house villages have nearly quadrupled nationally, from 34 in 2019 to 123 in 2024, often organized by nonprofits or faith groups outside conventional housing systems. Portland's Dignity Village, self-governed by around 60 residents on city-provided land, contrasts with Austin's larger Community First Village, which now houses more than 500 people and has drawn $35 million in federal pandemic-relief funds for expansion.
