Michigan Democrats gathered at the Lansing Center to finalize nominations for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, university boards, and the state supreme court ahead of the Nov. 3 election. Party leaders framed the day as one of unity against rising costs and the Trump administration, even as the spring convention's rifts over Israel and the Senate primary lingered in the background.

Winnie Brinks was nominated for lieutenant governor alongside gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson, while Garlin Gilchrist and Eli Savit were nominated for secretary of state and attorney general, respectively, both pledging to resist federal overreach. Gilchrist specifically cited a Supreme Court decision allowing a Trump executive order restricting mail-in voting to proceed, and the Justice Department's pursuit of Michigan voter roll data including birthdates and Social Security numbers.

Meanwhile, the party's Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who won a razor-thin primary over Rep. Haley Stevens, continues to face friction with some Jewish Democrats over his stance on Gaza and past appearances with streamer Hasan Piker. The convention proceeded without disruption, though attendance visibly thinned as nominations wore on.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nothing says party unity quite like a chair reminding everyone not to harass each other and a shrinking room as the roll call drags on. The candidates' promises to stand between voters and the federal government are easy to make from a podium; whether they can be kept is a November problem, not an August one.
