Thousands gathered at the Lincoln Memorial on the 63rd anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech, organized around a 'Defend the Vote' theme months after the Supreme Court's Louisiana v. Callais decision weakened Voting Rights Act protections for majority-Black House districts. Speakers included Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III, Yolanda Renee King, Hakeem Jeffries, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Speakers criticized the Callais ruling, ongoing mid-decade redistricting, and the SAVE America Act, a Trump-backed bill requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote. A new USPS rule imposing requirements on mail-in ballot envelopes and restricting delivery to unverified voters drew particular protest; a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against it Thursday, which USPS appealed Friday.

One demonstrator, 73-year-old Gary Roush, carried a sign accusing the administration of using the Postal Service to suppress mail-in voting and said he is 'extremely worried' about the midterms.

Sixty-three years after a quarter-million people demanded the right to vote, the demand has not gotten any less necessary, just better dressed in procedural language like 'ballot envelope requirements.' Progress, it turns out, is not a one-way street, and apparently neither is the mail.
