Women who grew up under China's one-child policy were raised by parents who invested heavily in education, professional training, and mobility, producing a generation of only daughters who now make up more than half of university students and populate elite professions in record numbers.

That same generation is now central to China's declining birthrate, as women interviewed describe prioritizing autonomy, financial flexibility, and meaningful work over marriage timelines their families once assumed would arrive on schedule.

The piece frames this not as rejection of marriage or motherhood outright, but as women no longer treating those outcomes as automatic obligations that outrank everything else they were taught to want.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nobody forced these women to become ambitious; the state and their parents did that on purpose, and did it well. Treating the resulting fertility numbers as a mystery to be solved rather than a bill coming due for a very successful policy is its own kind of comedy, just a quiet one.
