Researchers at the University of South Carolina report that a nanoparticle treatment called Nano-ERASER restored memory and nesting behavior in Alzheimer's-model mice by converting astrocytes, non-neuron support cells, into functional neurons.
The particles cross the blood-brain barrier and deliver antibodies that break down a protein called PTBP1, triggering the conversion without altering the cell's DNA. Treated mice showed more neurons, less inflammation, and lower amyloid-beta levels after just two injections.
The study's corresponding author, Peisheng Xu, was explicit that the work does not show the treatment works in humans; the team's next steps are longer-term durability testing, primate studies, and eventually human trials.
