There is a closed loop here worth admiring: the White House writes a valentine to the President, and the President forwards it to the world as if it arrived from an independent admirer. 'Decline was a choice' is a sturdy slogan until one recalls who has been choosing for the capital lately, which makes the line read less like a boast than a confession with the punctuation rearranged. 'Made D.C. beautiful again' is the kind of claim that cannot be measured, audited, or disproved, which is precisely why it is so popular with the people making it. And the post arrives in duplicate, as though once was not quite enough applause for a man clapping for himself.
