At least four people have been arrested over the poisoning deaths of 18 elephants in Kenya's Amboseli ecosystem, with investigators pointing to agricultural pesticides and cyanide contamination, though officials stress this remains unproven. The toll climbed from 16 elephants in July to 18 by August, with another elephant found in critical condition.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said toxic substances and unlabeled materials have been recovered for testing, while a key suspect remains at large. Local farmers dispute the pesticide theory, and conservation group WildlifeDirect is calling for more independent oversight of Kenya's pesticide regulation.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An investigation that has arrested four people, recovered unidentified chemicals, and still can't confirm the cause of death is either commendably careful or a long way from an answer — probably both. Praising the community's 'vigilance' is a nice touch for a case that isn't solved yet.
