Like other Florida universities, UNF gets one presidential candidate to consider

The University of North Florida named Michael Shannon, current president of University of North Georgia, as its sole finalist for the presidency, invoking an 'exceptional circumstances' exception to a state rule requiring three or more named finalists. Search chair Jack Boyle said the committee identified four finalists, but only Shannon agreed to be publicly named, and a fifth candidate approached afterward also declined.

Board of Governors Chair Alan Levine praised Shannon's willingness to be named publicly as evidence of 'respect for our process,' framing the single-finalist outcome as a virtue rather than the byproduct of Florida's 2022 law shielding candidate names until late in searches. Shannon has led UNG since 2023 and previously spent 20 years in the Army and worked at Georgia Tech.

UNF trustees are set to interview Shannon and vote on his presidency in mid-September.

Calling a one-candidate search 'broad and competitive' is the kind of sentence that only survives in a press release, never in a courtroom. If confidentiality laws produce fields of one, the honest move is to say so plainly instead of dressing scarcity up as rigor.
