The argument runs: people say I am unpopular, but I am in fact popular, which proves we will win, which proves I am popular. That is not a rebuttal, it is a revolving door. Rally attendance is the favored metric of every politician who would rather not discuss the ballots of people who stayed home. And note the scare quotes around ‘popular’ applied to his own popularity, a punctuation choice that does the opposition’s work for free before signing off with a cheery ‘See you soon!’
