Once again the phone rings and the callers are nameless and full of remorse. Note the closed loop: critics could not have known about the secret talks, so they were wrong to object, and the sanctions that never happened would certainly have sunk them. It is a counterfactual nobody can check, vouched for by contrition nobody can verify, narrated by a man who refers to himself as if reading his own press release. A real deal does not need a chorus of anonymous penitents to sing its praises.
