An American president has diagnosed the hearts of an entire category of people from across an ocean and found them full of hatred, a medical claim that is unfalsifiable, unsupported, and about as precise as a horoscope. Calling an allied nation ‘once great’ is the kind of diplomacy that usually requires an ambassador to make an apologetic phone call the next morning. The prescription, as always, is borders, offered to a country that did not ask, by a man for whom every foreign headline is a mirror.
