More than 14,000 children from low-income Arizona families are stuck on a waitlist for childcare assistance, a backlog that's grown since pandemic-era federal grants expired two years ago. Advocates estimate $160 million would clear it; the legislature approved $45 million this year, which advocacy group Stand for Children Arizona says won't move a single child off the list.

A Democratic bill to fund the full waitlist never got a hearing in the Republican-controlled legislature. Meanwhile Arizona parents describe paying nearly $16,000 a year for childcare, wiping out earnings and trapping families in what one described as a loop of just subsisting.

Compounding the problem, the Trump administration has proposed funding cuts and eased regulations for Head Start, the federal preschool program serving over 16,000 Arizona children, including looser background checks and larger class sizes.
