Michigan Democrats criticized new 50% tariffs Trump imposed on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods after trade talks collapsed, warning of higher costs for groceries, gas and manufacturing in a state deeply tied to Canadian trade. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would retaliate starting Sept. 8 with measures hitting steel, dairy, appliances and farm equipment.

Democratic officials, including Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, tied the tariffs to Republican candidates John James and Mike Rogers, both of whom have supported Trump's trade agenda; Rogers' campaign did not directly address the new tariffs. James' campaign countered by blaming state-level Democratic leadership for Michigan's economic rankings.

Trump has defended the tariffs while also floating renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America,' a proposal that arrived alongside the collapse of trade talks rather than any resolution of them.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a trade dispute produces both a 50% tariff and a suggestion to rename a Great Lake, it is fair to ask which one the administration considers the more serious policy proposal. Michigan's economy will not be reassured by geography trivia.
