Prosecutors rest their case in Tupac Shakur murder trial

Nevada prosecutors rested their case Wednesday against Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former Compton Crips figure on trial nearly three decades after rapper Tupac Shakur's 1996 murder in Las Vegas. Jurors watched a YouTube clip of Davis promoting his own book, “Compton Street Legend,” and heard recorded jail calls in which he referenced having “blood on my money.”

Prosecutors say a gang rivalry, stemming from an earlier mall fight, led to an assault on Davis's nephew at the MGM Grand hours before the shooting, and that Davis passed a pistol into the backseat of a car where Shakur was later shot. Davis has previously suggested in interviews that his nephew, Orlando Anderson — who died in an unrelated shooting in 1998 — fired the fatal shots.

Defense attorney Michael Sanft has dismissed his client's public statements as exaggeration for book sales and media appearances, noting authorities waited some 30 years to bring charges. The judge has restricted how much of Davis's criminal history, including a 2024 jailhouse fight conviction, prosecutors can raise if he takes the stand.
